As an accompaniment to a national touring exhibition of material from the DRU archives, this book documents a groundbreaking approach to design that was shaped by inter-war developments in artistic discourse and post-war trends in industry and communication.

KONICHIWA!

Mr Murphy and the B gang have recently returned from their Tokyo travels, and it seems they’ve been busy! Whilst they were in the land of the rising sun they met up with the emporium of want and desire that is Tomorrowland. The result is a glorious selection of 5 exclusive tees designed by our very own art director, Christopher Colville-Walker and his studio.

As if that wasnt enough the boys also designed a super special window display and in-store shopping area themed around our very own b Magazine at Tomorrowlands Shibuya store in the bustling heart of central Tokyo.

Cho-kawaii!!!

There we were thinking they’d just been shopping and stuffing their faces…

On Wednesday 2nd may, B and our best buds ASOS unveiled a lil’ project we’ve been working on…

Our wonderful womenswear designer Miss Chloe Struyck has made a double special exclusive collection for everyone’s favourite one stop shop ASOS. Kicking the summer into gear, or at least attempting to tease the sun from behind London’s dreary skys, she’s gone for a bold take on a Hawaiian print pairing it with some of the most popular styles in B Stores SS12 collection.

This isn’t all though, our friends at Colville-Walker have also created a short film for the project.

As most of you probably know by now, B doesn’t need much of an excuse for a knees up, but a capsule collection, a film! We thought we’d pull all the stops out for this one. Lashings of lethal summer coolers flowed courtesy of Absolut, as did some questionable dance moves courtesy of all the staff of B Store…

In his analysis in Notes Towards A Critique of Money, the Greek economist and philosopher Georgios Papadopoulos discusses the function of money in the current juncture of financial collapse and intensified social antagonism.

Combining Lacanian psychoanalysis and Baudrillardian structuralism, the book creates a universe where price and sign are entangled, giving rise to the dominant organizing form of capitalism. The fantasmatic management of desire enforces this structural principle on the subjective level and encourages the libidinal investment in the dominant representations of social reality as they are produced by the combined principles of signification and economic valuation. Here, money signifies the particular content that hegemonizes the universal ideological construction of capitalism providing a particular and accessible meaning to economic value, which colors the very universality of the system of prices and accounts for its efficiency

Two Peacocks is a project conceived of and led by artist John Walter. Developed over the course of one year, the project culminated in an exhibition that took the form of a Department Store at Gallery North, Newcastle and an accompanying book.

Designed by Daniela Meloni, Two Peacocks is both a catalogue for the show, as well as a dictionary for the methodology of the collaborative project.
Two Peacocks collapses together relational aesthetics, fictional narratives and materiality to produce a new kind of group show; one in which the authorship of the participating artists is collapsed and the hierarchies between craft and art, prop and masterpiece are questioned.
Participants in the project include: John Walter, Michael Whitby, Matthew Breen, Corinne Felgate, Hannah Gillespie and Neesha Champaneria, Ludovica Gioscia, Will McLean, Jamie Quantrill, Ollie Harrop, Diana Taylor, Cian Donnelly, Daniela Meloni.

80 pages

Hardcover

Published by Bibliotheque McLean

£15

This week, B has decided to start a new, regular feature all about the people inspiring the people!

What better place to start than at our own front door? Creative
Director, co-owner and designer of B Store, Mr Matthew Murphy tells us
why he’s loopy for Woody…

B. So Mr. Murphy, keep us waiting no longer, we must know. Who is your style icon?
MM. Mr. Woody Allen.

B. Woody Allen is a multi faceted artist and a man of many talents, but let’s be honest, he’s not so known for his style, what is it that you found so inspirational in him when designing the SS12 collection?

MM. His ‘non style’ was something that was particular reference point when designing the collection. He always stated in interviews that his appearance and style was not something he felt important but I believe this is what created his style. He wore a mix of american ivy league, mixed with a little geography teacher, plaid shirts with wide cotton military pants and a pair of derby shoes or keds sneaker. Also, we took some literal references from his character in Manhattan, rugby style sports shirt worn with wide leg twill pants (look no’17 from look book) made more contemporary with the fit and worn with a sandal.

B. Woody Allens work can be broken into several definable periods, is there any one that held particular significance when designing the collection?

MM. our style reference was taken from when woody allen was at the peak of his film making career in the late 70′s, the period and
atmosphere of film’s such as ANNIE HALL, MANHATTAN and INTERIOR’S

B. Woody Allen is famously head over heels for New York. Do you feel a similar affinity for a certain city?

MM. Of course my home is London but lifestyle and aesthetic I have to say Paris, I am a complete francophile, serge, leftbank in the 50′s, Francois Hardy, architecture and style of Le Corbusier and the nouvelle vague film movement, have been referential material in previous collections. The city itself continues to inspire with it’s beauty.

B. Where would be your 5 must see/do places/things in this place?

MM. the 18th arrondissement particularly Monmatre.

Dinner at Nanashi rue de Paradis in the 10th. Japanese French fusion food in a canteen style restaurant designed by confetti system.

Negroni cocktails at Candleria, a backroom late night bar behind a taco cafe.

Summers evening, alongside the Seine at Pont Neuf, with a blanket, bottle of Cote du Rhone, cheese and bread.

Bastille food market on a sunday, with a cheeky glass of vin rouge and a croissant for breakfast at the Le Baron Rouge.

B. Woody Allen is known for a trademark semi-autobiographical style in his film making, often going as far as to play the role himself. If someone was making a film about your life, who would you want to play you, and why?

MM. Unfortunately all the actor’s that I believe would be capable of accomplishing my complex character well, are dead. But if I could bring them back to life it would be DIRK BOGARDE or ALAIN DELON
